Witness to Athens’ singular mix of old and new, Hotel Grande Bretagne is a gateway to the vivid sights and sounds that capture the unmatched spirit of Europe’s oldest capital. Located at the corner of the impressive Syntagama Square, the hotel offers uninterrupted views of the Acropolis, while the ritual changing of the Evzone guard in front of the Parliament building occurs virtually on its doorstep.

In addition to such celebrated attractions as the Parthenon, the Temple of Poseidon, the National Archeological Museum and Cape Sounion, to name a few, we recommend the following as special nearby places to explore:

The Plaka - This enchanting neighborhood embraces archeological sites nestled next to small ouzerias and tavernas, colourful flower stands and artisan shops for an authentic flavor of local Athens. The Sunday flea market at Monastiraki Square is well worth a visit.

The Psiri - This quarter comes alive when the sun sets—perfect for night owls in search of superb live performances of every kind of music imaginable.

Temple of Zeus - Just 700 meters south of Syntagma Square, the temple's foundations date back to the tyrant Pisistratus in 515 BC. Its graceful columns influenced the development of Corinthian style.

Ancient Agora - The most famous agora in Greece, Ancient Agora once had private housing, until it was reorganized by Peisistratus in the 6th century BC into the center of Athenian government.

Lycabettus Hill - Approximately 300 meters high, this favourite spot among locals and visitors alike boasts superb views and a sense of tranquility amidst the sprawling Athenian landscape. Intrepid travellers may ascend the hill on foot. The funicular is an easier alternative.
